Want a Lower Electric Bill? Measure First

A lower bill usually starts with finding where energy is being used. That gives you a baseline and helps you judge whether any change actually works.

Safety note: Electrical work can cause shock, fire, equipment damage, or utility hazards. Use qualified professional help for household wiring, transfer equipment, and any grid connected work.

Review usage history

Compare monthly kilowatt hour use across seasons. Separate changes in energy use from changes in utility rates when you can.

Find large loads

Heating, cooling, water heating, dryers, pumps, and other major appliances can dominate household use.

Fix easy losses

Air sealing, thermostat schedules, efficient lighting, maintenance, and appliance settings can reduce waste in many homes.

Measure improvements

Compare energy use before and after a change while accounting for weather and occupancy. Measured results are more useful than a promised percentage.

Treat generation as a separate decision

If you are considering solar, storage, or another generation project, compare its documented output, installed cost, maintenance, and expected life with your actual energy needs.
